WELCOME TO THE

MIDJO-PASTO- GALLERY

Cornell University in Ithaca New York happened to be the crossroad of two men of extraordinary talent and artistic vision. Though of differing temperament and personality, a bond was formed between each of these gifted individuals that was more profound than merely that of teacher and student. Their friendship and influence in each others' lives was enduring and enhanced the work of both.

Professor Christian Midjo was a Norwegian born portrait and landscape artist whose Scandinavian heritage remained perennially at the heart of his work. The art of Midjo consistently makes his degree of mastery apparent. In the paintings of his homeland, majestic use of perspective and color allow one to almost feel the crisp, cool air of Norway's snow touched mountains and icy fjords. In his portrait work, Midjo's sensitivity and insight allow him to convey the persona as if mere paint was flesh and soul. He was commissioned by Cornell University to apply this skill to creating portraits of a number of the school's prominent faculty members and these still adorn its walls today.

To label Dr. Tarmo Pasto simply an artist would be to exclude several other equally significant facets of this remarkable individual. Teacher, psychologist, writer, researcher and environmentalist ahead of his time, Dr. Pasto was a renaissance man in the fullest sense of the term. His extensive study and analyses regarding the ways in which the human psyche perceives, symbolizes and associates our three dimensional world gave him an approach and technique that is equal parts artwork and psychoanalysis. Brilliant use of dimension in the tradition of Cezanne, combined with warm, vibrant yet never excessive color combine to place the viewer in a world that is equal parts reality and surrealism.

The Midjo-Pasto Gallery is proud to present a dual legacy that is moving, prolific and profound.
